Vassar College sat on the hills above the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie in 1912, and the Arlington name on this view refers to the nearby community on the college's edge. Matthew Vassar, a brewer, founded the school in 1861 as a women's college, and it opened in 1865 as one of the earliest colleges in the country to offer women a full four-year liberal arts course. By 1912 the campus was a busy setting of academic halls, dormitories, and athletic grounds, and students were known for their clubs, dramatics, and the rivalries of their classes. Poughkeepsie itself was a river city of mills, shops, and steamboat landings, and the railroad bridge that crossed the Hudson there, opened in 1889, linked it to lines running east and west.
