In 1909 Vassar College sat on a hill above Arlington, a village next to the river city of Poughkeepsie, New York. Matthew Vassar, a brewer, had founded the school in 1861, and it had opened its doors in 1865 as one of the first colleges in the country to offer women a full four-year liberal arts education. Poughkeepsie's economy then rested on its riverfront mills, shops, and rail lines, and the Hudson below the campus carried steamboat and freight traffic. Students and faculty lived in a state where women still could not vote, and the suffrage campaign was gaining ground in the years around this photograph.
