Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute sat on the hillside above Troy, New York, in 1909, when the city was one of the country's leading centers of iron, collar and shirt manufacturing, and textile production. Founded in 1824 as a school for engineering and applied science, the college had by then trained a long line of railroad, bridge and mining engineers who helped build the nation's rail network. Troy's mills, foundries and the Hudson River waterfront made it a place where practical training was valued, and the campus reflected that focus on laboratories, drafting and surveying. The city itself was a busy river port with streetcars, substantial churches and a growing immigrant population, and many of its residents would have known the college as a source of local engineers and as a point of civic pride on the hill.
