Elmira College, in Elmira, New York, was already more than fifty years old in 1909, having been chartered in 1855 as the Elmira Female College, and it is often cited as one of the first institutions in the country authorized to grant degrees to women. The campus sat on the hills above a city that lived by the Erie and Northern Central railroads, whose shops and freight yards gave work to many residents. Elmira's factories also turned out bridge iron, agricultural machinery, and cigars, and the Chemung River valley below the college supplied water and transportation for those works. Many townspeople of the period would have known the college as a neighbor on the hill and as the place where Mark Twain's in-laws, the Langdons, hosted him at nearby Quarry Farm each summer.
