Cornell University, set on the hills above Ithaca, New York, was in 1909 a school of about four decades' standing, founded in 1865 with a gift from Ezra Cornell, whose fortune came from telegraph enterprises. Its land-grant mission drew students in agriculture, engineering, and the mechanical arts, and it gave the small lakeside town on Cayuga Lake much of its identity. Ithaca's economy also rested on manufacturing, including gloves and firearms, and on rail lines that carried goods and students through the Finger Lakes region. Townspeople and students alike would have known the place for its gorges and waterfalls, its football and crew rivalries, and the campus buildings rising above the valley.
