Ithaca, New York, in 1909 was a small city at the south end of Cayuga Lake, and much of its daily life revolved around Cornell University on the hill above town. Cornell, chartered in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, had opened in 1868 as a land-grant institution combining the liberal arts with agriculture and engineering, and by the early 1900s students and faculty were a visible part of the town. Local factories, including the Ithaca Gun Company, made firearms and employed many residents, while railroad lines along the lake carried goods and travelers to markets beyond the Finger Lakes. This view shows the campus rising from the slopes, a place people in the region knew for its lakeside setting and its growing reputation in higher learning.
