Cornell University sat on the hills above Ithaca, New York, in 1909, when the young land-grant and private university was roughly four decades past its founding in 1865. Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White had created it with a mission to teach practical subjects alongside the liberal arts, and by the early 1900s agriculture, engineering, and the College of Arts and Sciences drew students from across the state and beyond. The campus was reached by trolley and by the Lehigh Valley and Ithaca rail lines, which carried coal, lumber, and farm goods through a town whose economy leaned heavily on the university. Cayuga Lake lay just below, and the surrounding gorges already drew visitors who would have recognized the view as the pride of a college town on the rise.
