Ithaca, New York, in 1909 was a small city at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, with its fortunes closely tied to Cornell University, which had opened in 1868 under the founding gifts of Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. The campus stood on the hills above town, where stone halls and towers rose among the trees and drew students from across the country. Downtown, manufacturers such as the Ithaca Gun Company and the Ithaca Calendar Clock Company provided jobs alongside the railroads that ran through the valley. Residents would have known Ithaca as a college town shaped by its lake, its steep hills, and the steady presence of students and professors among local families.
