Cornell University, perched on a hill above Ithaca, New York, was about four decades past its founding in 1865 when this 1909 view was made. Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White had established the school as a land-grant university, and its buildings stood among the gorges and slopes that rise from the south end of Cayuga Lake. The city below depended on the university for much of its life, and manufacturers such as the Ithaca Gun Company gave the town a second industry. Rail lines, including the Lehigh Valley, carried students, goods, and visitors into the valley, and residents of the time would have known Ithaca as a college town shaped by its campus and its lake.
