Ithaca, New York, in 1902 was a small lakeside city at the foot of Cayuga Lake, shaped by Cornell University, which had opened in 1868 on a hill above the town. The university drew students from across the country, and its professors, lecture halls, and fraternity houses gave the city much of its daily rhythm. Industry in the valley included the Ithaca Gun Company, known for its shotguns, and the Lehigh Valley Railroad ran through town, moving freight and passengers along the lake. Townspeople knew the place for its gorges, waterfalls, and the campus that crowned the slope above them.
