Dyckman Flats, in the Westchester County section along the Harlem River in 1902, was still a mix of farmland and open marsh at the northern edge of what would become New York City. The Dyckman family had held land in the area since the colonial era, and the low ground near the river was used mainly for hay, pasture, and market gardening. Just across the river, Manhattan was rapidly filling with new streets and apartment blocks, and the consolidation of the five boroughs in 1898 made the city's growth a daily topic for residents here. Many people in this part of Westchester still traveled by horse, trolley, and ferry, and they tended to think of themselves as country folk on the edge of a city that was reaching northward toward them.
