A wide, stretched-out view of a crowded New York street shows horse-drawn carriages sharing the roadway with pedestrians thronging the sidewalks. Panoramic cameras like the one likely behind this image swept a lens across a long arc to capture far more than a standard plate could, and they were a novelty around the turn of the twentieth century. Photographers often used them to record crowds at parades, civic events and busy thoroughfares. Pictures like this one are valued for showing city life before automobiles dominated the streets, with transport, dress and commerce all visible in a single frame.
