Central Park's Mall, the long tree-lined promenade running south from the Bethesda Terrace area, is the setting here, and the crowds strolling beneath its elms show how the park drew New Yorkers outdoors within a few decades of its opening. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and laid out in the 1850s and 1860s, Central Park was meant to give residents of a crowded city a place to walk, ride and see one another in a shared public setting. The Mall, with its double rows of American elms and its statuary, became one of the park's most fashionable routes. Look closely at the dress and the way people gather in groups, which reflect how the space was used as much as how it was designed.
