Bethesda Terrace and its Angel of the Waters fountain sit at the middle of Central Park, where a broad stair descends from the Mall toward the lake. Designed as part of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's plan for the park, the terrace was completed in the 1860s, and the bronze angel by Emma Stebbins, unveiled in 1873, was the first public statue commissioned for the park. In a panoramic view, the arcade's tiled ceiling and the lake beyond show how the architects combined formal stonework with the surrounding landscape.
