The record gives us little beyond a wide black and white view of a hillside road lined with houses, so the most useful way to read it is as a document of a streetscape. Panoramic photographs like this were often made with specialized cameras that exposed a long strip of film, producing a stretched horizon that captures the rise and fall of the land and the way houses were set along a slope. In New York City, hillside streets of this kind were common in the outer boroughs and the Bronx, where grading and early residential development reshaped the terrain. Looking closely, the viewer can trace how the road climbs and how each dwelling sits at its own level above the street.
