Luna Park, the amusement park that opened at Coney Island in 1903, is the subject here, and this panoramic view takes in the fountain at its center and the dense crowds gathered around it. Panoramic cameras of the early twentieth century swept slowly across a scene, so people near the edges sometimes appear stretched or blurred, a telltale sign of the process. Coney Island drew huge weekend crowds from across New York City, and Luna Park, with its towers, lights and water displays, became one of its most famous attractions before a fire destroyed much of it in 1944.
