Luna Park on Coney Island, the Brooklyn amusement grounds that opened in 1903, is the setting here, and the wide panoramic format captures the sheer size of the gathering on its midway. Coney Island drew enormous summer crowds from the city by trolley and later subway, and the park's towers, lights and rides made it one of the most famous pleasure grounds in the country. Panoramic pictures like this one were a popular way to record such mass outings, since they could take in hundreds of people at once. Look closely at the faces and clothing to get a sense of how working-class New Yorkers spent their leisure days.
