Here the waterfront itself is the subject: a wide panorama of New York harbor's edge, where the sweep of the frame lets the working piers and street traffic share one view. The mix of horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles is what dates the scene to the transitional years of the early twentieth century, when motor vehicles were spreading through the city but horses still hauled freight and carried passengers along its streets. Panoramic views like this were popular then because they let viewers take in the scale of the port and the crowded avenues at once. Look closely at the mix of vehicles and at the waterfront activity behind them to see how the city was in the middle of changing its streets.
