The view is taken from across the water, with the whole Manhattan skyline stretched edge to edge in one wide sweep. Panoramic city views like this were a popular format in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when photographers joined several exposures or used long-format cameras to capture the rapid rise of tall commercial buildings on the island.
