West Point, New York, marked its centennial in 1902, one hundred years after Congress and President Thomas Jefferson established the United States Military Academy on the bluffs above the Hudson River in 1802. By then the post was closely tied to the nation's army, and many of its graduates had recently served in the Spanish-American War and in the Philippines. The academy's reputation rested on the engineering curriculum shaped by Sylvanus Thayer, the superintendent often called the father of West Point, whose reforms in the 1810s and 1820s still defined its teaching. Visitors arriving by river steamer or by rail on the opposite shore saw a campus of stone barracks and parade ground set among Revolutionary-era earthworks, and locals in Highland Falls and the surrounding Hudson Highlands would have counted the academy among the region's most important institutions.
