West Point, New York, in 1909 was best known as the home of the United States Military Academy, which had trained army officers on its bluffs above the Hudson River since 1802. The academy was then a closed, disciplined community of cadets, instructors and officers' families, and its Plain sat at the center of a town whose life revolved around drill, parades and the academic calendar. Across the river, the Hudson remained a working waterway of steamboats, barges and freight traffic linking New York City with the upriver counties. Visitors came by train and by river steamer to see the grounds, which were already drawing attention for their historic sites and views of the Highlands.
