West Point, New York, in 1909 was the home of the United States Military Academy, which had trained army officers on the bluffs above the Hudson River since 1802. The cadet corps of that era drilled in formal ranks and marched in regular ceremonies, and the Saturday inspection dress parade was one of the academy's most visible rituals, when cadets in full uniform were reviewed by officers on the plain before visitors and garrison families. The post had grown steadily under superintendents who expanded its curriculum in engineering and its facilities along the river. Across the country in 1909, many Americans knew West Point mainly through such ceremonies, which tied the academy to the nation's growing professional army.
