West Point, New York, marked its centennial in 1902, when the Military Academy on the Hudson had been training officers for a full century. Its cadets drilled in gray wool uniforms and spent summers in camp, and the academy's graduates filled the officer ranks of an army that had grown quickly after the 1898 war. Across the river, the Hudson River Day Line steamers carried excursionists up from New York City, so many visitors saw the campus from the water before they climbed the hill. For the people of the nearby Highlands towns, the anniversary was a chance to celebrate an institution that shaped their local economy and their sense of place.
