West Point in 1909 was best known as the home of the United States Military Academy, which had trained army officers since 1802 and stood on high ground above a sharp bend of the Hudson about fifty miles north of New York City. Cadets drilled on the plain and marched to meals and chapel in gray uniforms, and the post set the rhythm of the village, where many residents worked as civilian employees, tradesmen, or boardinghouse keepers. The river carried much of the area's traffic, with Hudson River Day Line steamers running between New York and Albany and drawing summer excursionists who came up to see the Academy grounds. Freight and passenger boats passing below the Highlands kept the post tied to the city and to the wider state, even as the military school itself remained a world apart.
