Stretched across a wide horizontal frame, this black-and-white view takes in an entire stretch of working water, with ships spread across the harbor from one edge to the other. New York Harbor was among the busiest ports in the world for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, with ferries, freighters and tugs crowding its channels, and panoramic views from that era let viewers scan the whole scene rather than a single vessel. Monochrome film suited the format, since its tonal range brings out masts, rigging and the texture of the water. The edges of the frame are worth a closer look, where smaller boats and distant piers hint at the scale of the port.
