This 1909 view shows the College of the City of New York, the public college that had moved into its new campus on the bluffs of Hamilton Heights, in upper Manhattan, only a couple of years earlier. The move from its older downtown site, near Lexington Avenue, gave the school a large, open campus with collegiate Gothic buildings, a change that reflected the city's growing investment in free higher education. Panoramic views like this one were popular in the early 1900s, and they were valued for recording whole streets and grounds in a single wide frame. Look along the skyline and the open lots around the buildings to see how sparsely developed this part of the city still was at the time.
