Grant's Tomb, the large granite mausoleum overlooking the Hudson on Riverside Drive in Upper Manhattan, is the subject that sets this panorama apart from other views on the board. Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who led the army to victory in the Civil War and later served as the 18th president, was buried there in 1897, after a public fundraising campaign paid for the monument. The wide format captures how the tomb sits within the boulevard's long curve, with the river and the surrounding parkland stretching beyond it. Panoramic images like this one show how the tomb and the avenue were laid out in the early twentieth century, when Riverside Park was still taking shape.
