Columbia University's campus on Morningside Heights is the subject here, shown in a wide panoramic view that takes in more of the grounds than a standard frame could. The university traces its roots to 1754, when it was founded as King's College under a charter from George II, and it moved to its Morningside Heights site in the late 1890s, where McKim, Mead & White laid out the classical quadrangle still central to the campus. A panorama suits the place well, since the symmetry of the buildings and open lawns is easiest to appreciate when the eye can travel across the whole composition.
