In 1909 the Thousand Islands spread across the St. Lawrence in Jefferson County, New York, where the river narrows as it leaves Lake Ontario, and no bridge yet joined the American and Canadian shores. Anglers came for muskellunge and black bass, and local guides, many from island families, rowed and steered parties through the channels. Inland, the farms of Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties sent dairy products and grain to market, and the cheese factories of the north country provided steady wages for many households. Ferries from Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island and freight traffic through the port of Ogdensburg kept the river busy well beyond the summer season.
