In 1909 the Thousand Islands were a summer retreat for visitors who spent their days rowing, sailing, and paddling among the channels between Wellesley Island and the mainland shore. Across the water on the Canadian side, Gananoque was a small river town, and steamers linked both shores with Kingston, Ontario, where the St. Lawrence leaves Lake Ontario. Watertown, the county seat of Jefferson County, was a manufacturing city whose mill workers often looked to the river for holidays and day trips. Summer visitors carried the region's reputation home with them, and the cottage colonies along the water depended on those visitors returning each year.
