In 1909 the Thousand Islands were the setting for some of the most lavish summer estates in the Northeast. George Boldt, the hotelier who ran the Waldorf-Astoria, had begun a stone castle on Heart Island in 1900, but work stopped in 1904 after his wife Louise died, and the building stood unfinished in the water. Nearby, Frederick Bourne, head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, had his own fortified-looking house on Dark Island, one of several wealthy family retreats that gave the channels a reputation beyond the region. Local people who worked as gardeners, boat crews, and servants for these households saw a sharp gap between the grand houses and the modest cottages around them. The unfinished castle on Heart Island became one of the region's most talked-about sights.
