In 1909 the Thousand Islands drew anglers from across the Northeast, who came for muskellunge and smallmouth bass in the channels between the rocky islets. Fishing guides, many of them local rowers who knew the weedbeds and shoals by heart, were hired by the day and often took clients out before dawn. Upriver, Ogdensburg, the St. Lawrence port in St. Lawrence County, shipped grain in the same season, so the river carried both sport and commerce. Many guides were island men who also worked as farm hands or boatmen in the slower months, and the water's reputation for large fish kept the region on the sporting map well into the twentieth century.
