In 1909 the Thousand Islands region centered on the river towns of Clayton and Alexandria Bay, where steamboat landings and boatyards gave the waterfront its daily rhythm. Clayton was known for building the wooden rowboats, sailing skiffs, and small launches that visitors and island residents relied on, and its shops worked through the spring to fit out boats before the summer season opened. Alexandria Bay served as a busy steamboat stop, where passengers stepped off excursion boats bound for hotels and cottages scattered across the islands. Residents who lived in these river towns measured their year by the first open water in spring and the close of the boating season in early autumn. Many of them worked in boat trades, hotels, and the freight that moved along the St. Lawrence.
