In 1909 the Thousand Islands sat on the international boundary between New York and Ontario, where the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario and flows northeast toward Montreal. Steamers carried passengers and freight between American and Canadian landings, and the channels were treacherous enough that pilots with local knowledge were valued. Along the water, the season was tied to the summer excursion trade, which drew visitors from Watertown, Syracuse, and farther away to stay in island cottages and hotels. Among the islanders, the river was a daily working road as much as a pleasure ground, and the boats, docks, and landings they tended were the basis of their living.
