In 1909 the Thousand Islands lay across an international boundary that could be crossed only by water, since no bridge yet joined New York with Ontario. The American and Canadian channels were navigated by pilots who knew the shifting rocks and currents, and the lake and river freighters passing through them carried grain and coal alongside the excursion boats. On the American side, Clayton and Alexandria Bay were the busiest landings, where families who came for a season of camping or cottage living met the boats that brought mail, supplies, and visitors. Locals who lived year-round on the islands often knew the region less as a resort than as a working waterway, and their livelihoods rose and fell with the navigation season.
