In 1909 the Thousand Islands drew much of their working life from the mainland farms and towns of Jefferson County, New York, which lay a short boat ride north and east of the channels. Dairy farms supplied milk and butter to local creameries and cheese factories, and the region's cheese was sold well beyond the county. Watertown, the county seat, was the largest city nearby, with mills and factories that made paper and other goods, and it sent much of its workforce and its shopping trade toward the river. Islanders bought groceries, hardware, and feed on the mainland and sold fish, firewood, and boat services in return. Many families on both sides of the water knew the summer crowds mainly as customers, while their own year turned on the farm calendar and the weather over the lake.
