The Thousand Islands, a scatter of rocky islands where the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario, were in 1909 best known as a summer playground for wealthy visitors and for the steamboat trade that carried them. Alexandria Bay and Clayton on the American shore served as the main landings, with hotels, boarding houses, and cottages filling the waterfront and the islands nearby. Fortunes from industry had recently reached the islands: George Boldt, the hotelier who ran New York's Waldorf-Astoria, had begun a great island castle that was left unfinished after his wife's death in 1904, and Frederick Bourne, president of the Singer Manufacturing Company, built his own island residence in the same years. Local life still depended on fishing, boatbuilding, and the seasonal crowds, and the river's commerce ran alongside the pleasure traffic.
