Hobart College in Geneva, New York, was a small men's college in 1909, chartered in 1822 as Geneva College and renamed for Bishop John Henry Hobart in 1860. Its campus sat near the north end of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region, and it shared the town with William Smith College, a women's college founded in 1908 as a coordinate institution. Geneva's economy in those years rested on farming, fruit and grape growing on the surrounding slopes, and the nursery and seed trades, while the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, established there in 1882, brought scientists and visitors to town. Rail lines along the lake carried students, produce and freight, and the college's buildings were a point of local pride for residents who knew Geneva as a school town as much as a farming center.
