Geneva, New York, in 1909 was a lakeside town at the north end of Seneca Lake in Ontario County, and its waterfront had long served the lake trade. Boats moved grain, produce, and freight between the town and ports along the shore, while nurseries and fruit and seed growing in the surrounding countryside kept many families employed. The State Agricultural Experiment Station, established there in 1882, drew scientists and farmers interested in fruit and vegetable crops. Hobart College anchored much of the town's academic and social life, and residents would have known the lakefront as the place where daily routines met the water.
