Oswego, New York, sits where the Oswego River meets Lake Ontario, and in 1909 its river front was still the working center of the city. Grain and flour had long moved through its elevators and mills, shipped on lake steamers and along the Oswego Canal, which tied the port to the wider Erie Canal system. Coal arriving by water supplied local industry, and wharves and warehouses crowded the riverbanks. Residents knew Oswego as a port and milling town, and also as the home of the State Normal School, whose teacher-training methods drew attention from educators well beyond the city. This view shows how commerce and civic pride shared the same stretch of water.
