Oswego, New York, in 1909 was a Lake Ontario port city at the mouth of the Oswego River, where grain elevators, flour mills, and rail yards tied the lake trade to the Erie Canal system. The Oil Well Supply Company's works, shown in this 1909 panoramic photograph, reflect how far the petroleum economy reached beyond the oil fields of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Drilling tools, pipe, and pumping equipment made by firms like this one were shipped by rail and water to producing regions across the country. For Oswego residents, the factory district along the river was part of a working city that also included a state normal school and the old Fort Ontario on the lakeshore. Few details of the company's Oswego operations survive in common accounts, so the picture is best read as a record of an industrial waterfront in a busy decade.
