Auburn, New York, in 1909 was a manufacturing city in the Finger Lakes region of Cayuga County, with a population near 35,000 and a economy built on textiles, agricultural implements, and shoe and leather goods. Its factories and rail yards were tied to the New York Central network, which carried goods and passengers through the city's downtown and along the Owasco Lake outlet. The city was also known for Auburn State Prison, one of the state's oldest penitentiaries, which had shaped its civic identity since the 1820s. Residents of the period would have recognized the skyline of church steeples, brick commercial blocks, and mill chimneys as the marks of a prosperous, industrious county seat at the height of the early twentieth-century boom.
