In 1909 Auburn, the seat of Cayuga County, was a city whose livelihood came largely from its workshops and mills, and the Columbian Rope Company, which made cordage, was among the employers that people in town would have named first. Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor, had made her home on South Street in Auburn and was still living there, a presence that many residents would have known about. The Auburn Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian school founded in 1818, shaped the city's religious and academic life and sent graduates into pulpits across the country. The photograph's view of the works reflects an industrial city that sat beside a respected seminary and a community with strong ties to the antislavery movement.
