Auburn, New York, was a manufacturing city and county seat in 1907, set between the Owasco Lake outlet and the hills of Cayuga County. Its economy rested on factories and on the Auburn State Prison, whose inmate labor and stone quarrying had long been part of local life. Rail lines carried goods from the city's works to markets across the state, and the population had grown steadily since the mid-19th century. Residents of the period knew Auburn as the home of William H. Seward, the former governor and secretary of state, whose house still stood on the city's streets. This view of the works shows the industrial side of a city that depended on its factories and rail connections.
