Auburn, New York, in 1909 was a manufacturing city in the Finger Lakes region, and the Columbian Rope Company was among its largest employers. The company made manila and sisal rope, cord, and twine, products that moved by rail and canal to farms, ships, and mills across the country. Auburn's factories drew workers from the surrounding farms and from immigrant families who had settled in the city's older wards. The city was also known for the state prison on its edge, for its lakeside parks, and for the abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who lived there in these years and was a well-known figure in the community.
