Auburn Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian school founded in 1818 in Auburn, New York, occupied its campus above the city in 1909, after generations of ministers had gone out from it to pulpits across the North. Auburn was a railroad and manufacturing town in Cayuga County, in the Finger Lakes region, with the Columbian Rope Company among its major employers and the state prison, opened in the late 1810s, shaping its reputation and economy. Its civic life centered on churches, schools, and fraternal lodges, many tied to the reform causes of earlier decades. Residents knew the city as the home of William H. Seward, the former governor and secretary of state, and Harriet Tubman was still living on South Street in 1909.
