Schenectady, New York, in 1907 was a city built around the General Electric Company's Schenectady Works, the sprawling plant on the city's east side where the company made generators, motors, and electrical apparatus for the growing power and railway trade. GE had formed in 1892 from the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston, and the Schenectady factory was among its largest and most important sites, drawing thousands of workers and shaping the city's population and neighborhoods. Electric lighting, streetcars, and interurban lines were spreading across the state in these years, and the works stood at the center of that expansion. Residents of the city knew it as the place where much of the nation's electrical equipment was built, and the plant's whistles and shifts set the rhythm of daily life for many families.
