Herald Square in Manhattan, where Broadway, Sixth Avenue and Broadway's diagonal cut across 34th Street, was already one of the busiest crossings in the city by 1907. The name comes from the New York Herald, whose headquarters stood on the square and whose building, completed in 1894, carried a clock tower that became a landmark. Pan photographs of the period, a term for the wide panoramic views made from multiple exposures, capture the crush of streetcars, horse-drawn wagons and pedestrians that defined the district as the city's department stores and theaters drew crowds uptown.
