Lower Manhattan's skyline is the subject here, seen from a wide sweep that takes in several of the tall office buildings rising over the streets below. Photographs like this one were made in the early 1900s, when steel-frame construction let architects push office towers far higher than the older masonry blocks around them. The sepia tone is typical of the period's printing processes, and the panoramic format reflects how photographers of the time stitched or exposed wide views to capture the crowded, fast-changing city. It is worth looking closely at the street level, where the density of rooftops and signage tells a story of commerce packed into very little ground.
