Looking north over Madison Square, this view is set apart by the two towers that dominate its skyline: the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, completed in 1909 and for a time the tallest building in the world, and the triangular Flatiron Building, finished in 1902 at the point where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue. The wide format suits the subject, since the square's open greenery and converging avenues only make sense when seen across a broad sweep. Pictures like this one document how quickly lower Manhattan rose into a dense band of steel-frame office towers in the early twentieth century, a shift that changed street life, traffic, and the look of the city.
